What makes comedy movies great?
Surely, the jokes you might say!
While the jokes are important it is more than just jokes that make comedy movies great.
A great comedy movie makes you want to love, cry, or miss someone dear to you, and make you laugh your hearts out.
Although not all movies are able to do all of that. Let alone make you smile unless you watch movies while high.
These are the movies that made me smile, gave me hope, taught me, made me want to love, and so much more.
These are 9 of the best comedy movies of 2020 you can enjoy now.
One small reminder that the stars mean IMDb scores, while the tomato you might just be able to guess 😉
Onward (2020) ⭐7.5 🍅 88%
Director: Dan Scanlon
Writers: Dan Scanlon, Keith Bunin, Jason Headley
Stars: Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus
One of the features that makes the movie great is the brother relationships in the best way possible
It is also a family movie with a strong emphasis on it, simultaneously accomplishing to stay light, and whimsical.
The movie is set in a magical world which seems like it is not quite necessary since they live normal lives like ours.
However, the second more things start to happen you understand that it was better set in that world.
The movie’s voice-over actors fit the character so well, that you already know the kind of fun you are going to receive before watching which is why it is rated well across all critics.
The movie is adequate all around, and is quite funny and was able to capture the hearts of the many. However, the one part it excelled at the most was its conclusion. The very part where it was able to capture my heart.
Lovebirds (2020) ⭐ 6 🍅 67%
Director: Micheal Showalter
Writers: Aaron Abrams, Brendan Gall
Stars: Issa Rae, Kumail Nanjiani, Paul Sparks
This romcom has good acting and one of the best chemistry on screen. That is probably what earned them their scores above 6.
It would have been one of the most boring movies of all time with the shakiest plot and tempt if it was not for a chuckle here and there and the acting of the characters. Of course, the acting was mentioned already, but it just does seem like the only positive thing about the movie.
Because it is not that funny enough, nor are there enough twists. Even the third acts’ action takes about 2 mins at max.
Yes, this is not an action movie, but you want to move your plot. The audience would expect a bit more action/adventure. Perhaps since the whole plot is based on the couple being blamed for the murder they did not commit. They need to find a way to catch the real murderer.
It would be better to have a bit deeper secondary characters. To conclude the events that happen with the grease lady and the senator. Although the duration is almost perfect.
To All the Boys: P.S I Still Love You (2020) ⭐️6 🍅 75%
Director: Michael Fimognari
Writers: Sofia Alvarez, Jmills, Goodloe, based on the novel by Jenny Han
Stars: Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, Jordan Fisher
This cute teen romantic movie received positive reviews from various places. As a sequel to the original to all the boys: PS, I loved before.
If you don’t know how that movie ended up, it was like this. There was a girl who wrote love letters. There were five of them until her sister exposed her. Then she had to fake-date one of them to make it seem like she did not like all others. Then they fall in love, voila, the movie is over.
The second one continues this story and goes a bit deeper into the difficulties of managing relationships as a teenager. Taking it from the first movie which did it in a much better and elegant way.
The second one also continues on the story when a different crush of hers comes into the story. You remember there were 5 guys right?. So, now she has to choose between her current boyfriend and the new guy.
It seems like an easy choice for someone reading it, but when you watch the movie does a great job of explaining both sides and their situation and succeeds at dividing the audience into two teams. That is how you know it was a good movie.
If you like the first one, you’re going to like the second one too. If you do not like the first one, however, you might not like the second, unfortunately.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) ⭐️6.6 🍅 64%
Director: Jeff Fowler
Writers: Pat Casey Josh Miller
Stars: Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Jim Carrey
This was one of the funniest comedies just because there are Jim Carrey and James Marsden in it. Two of my favorite actors. However, the movie has done well as to break the curse of video adaption into big-screen being so bad.
Have you ever watched Assassin’s Creed from a few years ago? The movie lacked the third act. It was written and filmed so badly that it just does not make sense. And there is a long list of other movies like that.
One such movie is Warcraft. The movie was liked by many who play the game and are familiar with the universe. But for those who are not familiar with the movie, the universe was like a blur. A bunch of factions fights each other for no reason. In movies there always has to be “whys” and that movie did not.
Until the Sonic the Hedgehog came along. This movie succeeded at doing what all those other movies failed.
If you were a fan of the game series you might not like the movie as much as it goes a bit off theme and game.
But the way they set up the universe and its characters are easily understood. So are their wants and needs and motivations.
You see, understanding character motivation is a big part of the movie. Just like in real life, if you knew why a person striving to be a medical doctor. For example, because his or her mother died of cancer. All of a sudden you understand why the person wants to become a doctor. Deep down you root for that person and want to help her become a doctor.
The same thing goes in movies except in many they just skip this part altogether. But Hedgehog producer excelled at it, adding a gist of comedy to keep the mood light at all times. It is an incredibly enjoyable and funny movie where everything makes sense and has a backstory you can understand.
Bad Boys for Life (2020) ⭐️6.7 🍅 77%
Director: Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah
Writers: Peter Craig, Joe Carnahan
Stars: Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens
If you like WIll Smith and Martin Lawrance then there should not be a better movie to watch this year. However, the movie does have its flaws in its plot and writing.
The biggest one I did not like was the fact that Will Smith’s Son turns against his mother in the last act of the movie just because he realized what his mother has done.
It is like, you are my dad, and you are a cop. I must be on your side and fight against my mother who by the way brought me up to my whole and was there for me, except she lied. So now she has to die.
It just does not make sense. Still it is okay in movies when stuff does not make sense, that is why they are movies.
But when an important part of the movie does not make sense it is almost like painting is missing some part, which is why it won’t look as good.
However, the charisma of the characters and the chuckles it provides is just enough to make up for the technical issues. it is a funny and enjoyable movie.
Emma (2020) ⭐️6.8 🍅 86%
Director: Autumn de Wilde
Writers: Eleanor Catton, based on the novel by Jane Austen
Stars: Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, Mia Goth
In short, the movie is about a spoiled aristocrat’s obsession with matchmaking people around her for sports. It might not sound right from the start. But when you watch it and see it in action with a bit of Austen’s’ comedic voice. It is quite amusing.
If Jane Austen is your cup of tea, you are simply going to love this movie, despite its familiarities, the movie was able to bring colorful and whimsical life to the satire of 19th century growing up story.
The production excels at making the movie quite quirky yet unique and the custom design is the highest quality. for some reason, the movie reminds you of Wes Anderson’s style of movies.
Have you ever heard of an adage that goes “every scene is a painting”?
Well if you have not, it means that the scenes of your movie should be so good as to be regarded as painting.
Emma’s scenery, custom design and everything else related to visuals are nearly perfect. The life of a spoiled, self-proclaimed matchmaker might not seem interesting to watch if you have never read the books, nor watched any other adaptations of the movie.
However, the movie does not need anything extra being watched or read to be enjoyed. It is a great movie with great visuals and writing, production.
Banana Split (2018) ⭐️6.1 🍅 91%
Director: Benjamin Kasulke
Writers: Hannah Marks, Joey Power
Stars: Hannah Marks, Liana Liberato, Dylan Sprouse
It is not often that your girlfriend and ex get together and become friends, it is even less often that movies are made on this topic and this movie focuses on just that in a coming off age teen comedy style.
The movie is good at exploring the complication that comes with adolescence and the emotional struggles they face. This is the movie which does a good come combining it with a few chuckles and laughter.
Banana Split reminds of Booksmart if it were not for the storyline which is unique and fascinating, as were the acting. The movie is good at following the character arcs and their fulfillment in the end to a certain degree which probably gives the movie the drama side.
If you don’t want to watch the whole movie but just get the idea, then watch the trailer, it pretty much sums it up well without revealing the end, however, we all know how romcoms end.
The performance in the movie is to the point and neat, perhaps it is because one of the writers is acting out the main role or perhaps they are just good actors, you buy into the story easier and feel it.
Scoob (2020) ⭐️5.8 🍅 50%
Director: Tony Cervone
Writers: Matt Lieberman, Adam Sztykiel
Stars: WIll Forte, Mark Wahlberg, Jason Isaacs
It is hard to describe this movie in easier or simpler ways, because the animated movie is funny in many ways, but is kind of strange as well. Like if you were to watch the movie just to get a few chuckles out or watch it with your kids then you should be fine.
The movie wants to integrate today’s world views with the 60s, or more like updates the 60 to fit today’s audience, except they probably forget that a well-written movie is still a well-written movie even after half a decade or so, thus I bet kids would rather watch the earlier ones than this one.
With such an incredible cast, they obviously could do much better than a half-origin, half-continuation story that is hard to understand if you have not watched the other adaptations or series before.
I like the jokes here and there, and the animated movie is certainly not the best, but overall a fun watch with kids or for kids.
Guns Akimbo (2019) ⭐️6.3 🍅 53%
Director: Jason Lei Howden
Writers: Jason Lei Howden
Stars: Samara Weaving, Daniel Radcliffe, Mark Rowley
It is hard to imagine Harry Potter turned into a from farting corpse and to a player in a Skizm, especially for the fans. However, the later movie is fun enough and good enough to watch and enjoy.
The movie is set in a world where there is a popular app called Skizm which chooses people randomly and makes them fight to the death all the while streaming it. ‘
Our hero Miles is chosen due to his comment on the platform where he decides to go because he had found his calling to be bullying the bullies.
He gets caught as an amateur and gets guns bolted into his hand, literally, and made to fight Nix the champion in the game. Also, save his girlfriend who by the way dumped him just a day or two ago.
He plans to team up with her to take down the Skizm, which he succeeds eventually after a few trials and getting to know her.
They finally took down the Skizm only to realize it had succeeded in expanding into other countries.
The movie does feature comedy and deliver quite a few chuckles with good action. It is an overall good movie all around, with nothing exceptional in any area or so.
